  We stayed here for about a week. The home was great itself. The location was great also. The housekeeping was very rude. We asked for a couple of towels, as there was only 1 per person. The housekeeper wanted to come inside to make sure we weren't lying about how many towels were left. The jacuzzi went out, but the response from our contact was 2 hours later, and wasn't helpful at all. There is not much to do around this area, so hot tub and pool were important. I would recommend this home, but only if the owners got new management and new housekeepers. Pool lady cleaned the pool, then went and smoke a cigarette on the side of the house so all the smoke came in. We have a baby, so that was very unprofessional. Very unfriendly for the amount of money we spent.

    Mahalo for your review, Eve - although we are very confused by it. You'd confirmed as a party of 4 and housekeeping left 6 towel sets which should have been plenty. Vacation rentals are not like hotels where you are provided with new towels daily. We leave enough to cover the group as booked, and of course there's a washer and dryer so guests can launder towels during their visit if they feel the need to do so. Our housekeeping manager - who is a very kind and generous person with loads of Aloha - came quickly to provide more towels when you requested them. She had to access the house to get extra towels out of the supply cabinet. We were very sad to hear from her that she was not treated in a friendly manner by some members of your group when she came to assist you. Interestingly, another member of your group offered her a tip, which she declined. Kekela. your on-island contact, showed us her phone records. You'd texted to ask about the hot tub and she replied in 30 minutes, not two hours. She let you know that the hot tub works just fine, as long as you don't press the button for level two jets - as indicated by the sign at the house. If the pool cleaner was smoking on the property that is completely unacceptable, and we have contacted the pool cleaning vendor to let them know that.   Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful and spacious home, set on black lava cliffs on the ocean. The large living/dining/kitchen area, overlooked a pretty backyard with a tranquil pool and hot tub, facing the ocean. The house was clean and well-maintained. At night, we enjoyed listening to the waves crashing on one side, and the coqui frogs chirping on the other. If you want a different type of vacation experience but still in a comfortable large home, you will love this place. Proximity to Hilo, volcanoes national park, and South Puna made for easy and interesting day trips. The staff was friendly and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommended overall.

  We would have loved to have found salt and pepper, olive oil and vinegar, foil and plastic wrap for staples in the home. These basic items are missing. The pool is much small than portrayed in the photo. It is a narrow lap pool.We did love the location and the sound of the waves splashing nearby.

We do leave non-contaminable items that have been purchased by previous guests, but the list of ‘safe’ items has grown quite short due to COVID guidelines. That's why we recommend that guests pick up anything they know they will need when doing your shopping. We've been in this business for decades, and have learned that it's impossible to predict guests' taste when it comes to supplying food items. We do have a wonderful concierge recommendation, however, if guests would like to hire fridge stocking ahead of their visit! All of the photos, including the pool, are current photos of the property.   This house is absolutely gorgeous, and if you're lucky enough to have a clear morning, the sunrise setting can't be beat. We had not realized that the house was not air conditioned, and upon arrival it was HOT, but truly as soon as you get things opened up it cools off pretty quickly. The property manager was very responsive to questions - the hot tub wasn't working and she was able to tell us what to do immediatley. And FYI there is an alarm system panel inside the door, but no alarm to set (this is not mentioned in the house book).
  The only thing we did not love about this property was how far it is from everything. This side of the island does not have as many restaurants or shopping areas, and it is a long drive to anything, anyway. I would recommend this place for a "get away from it all" vacation - the kitchen is well equipped and the home and yard really invite you to stick around and relax.

  We loved our stay here! It was fantastic being that close to the ocean, having a pool to toss the kids in daily while the adults planned the next adventure, and seeing the stars come out at night. The beautiful carved doors throughout the home were a surprise bonus. They have a policy where you can leave your extra food or sunscreen or other things for the next renters if you don't want to take them home, which has resulted in a very well stocked house. Our kids had fun with the games and puzzle cabinet.
  
  I would recommend that the property management replace some of the window screens, as a couple have small tears where bugs can get through if you're opening the windows to cool the house down. Closing those couple of windows solves the problem, once you realize it needs to be done. Also, be aware that you will be hearing the coqui frogs at night. That was a bonus for our family, except one kid who had some trouble getting to sleep the rare evenings she wasn't worn out from swimming, snorkeling, beaching and hiking. You might want to discuss with your party before committing. It worked well for us, though, and we'd happily stay here again!

  We’ve never had a better vacation than this stay at Hale Mar on the Big Island! The house is right in the ocean with waves crashing into the cliffs or rolling gently. The sapphire blue ocean contrasted with the lush green jungle is a colorful delight! We actually cancelled a couple of activities because the property is SO relaxing we just swam in the pool, soaked in the hot tub and genuinely enjoyed each others presence. Hale Mar and the staff at Salt Water gave our family just what we needed. Thank you!

  Enjoyed our time at Hale Mar. The property is exactly as advertised - well kept, great layout and really responsive management company. The only drawback is the remote location. We were far from activities and restaurants.

We always encourage guests to research the location of their chosen vacation rental home prior to confirming because this is a BIG ISLAND (teehee) and Keaau oceanfront is not close to tourist activities - some guests LOVE this aspect of this location and others may prefer to be more in the center of activities. We do provide a House Book in the home with lots of ideas for cool things to do nearby including a hike to a secluded beach and lots of molten lava sites.   We were a family of 5 adults who spent Xmas holidays at Hale Mar. The property had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen was well equipped and the large tables both inside and on the patio nicely accommodate our family. In addition to the spacious eating areas, there was also a large Island, which enhanced our meal preparation. The pool was nice and refreshing while the hot tub was great for relaxing after a day of touring. Hale Mar was nicely appointed and had many furnishings that allowed for an enjoyable experience.
  
  Hale Mar is about a 30 minute drive from Hilo, so we tried to organize our shoppings and sight seeing to reduce the driving time in order to maximize our time at this oceanfront property. The local (close proximity) restaurant Kaleos Bar & Grill is highly recommended.
