Walking distance to Kehena Black Sand Beach, a clothing optional destination beach, Blue Kehena sits in the verdant jungle of the lush Kehena neighborhood. Elegant and exotic, the décor in Blue Kehena hearkens back to both missionary Hawaii and early influences of plantation workers from Japan with sturdy antiques, Asian influences, dramatic artwork and evocative modern furniture. Comfort is the foremost influence in the beds and lounge pieces in the home. Rich Koa wood panels, ceiling height doors and unique antiques grace each room of the 4 bedroom retreat.

NO parties please, this is a quiet residential neighborhood and local ordinances prohibit gatherings at licensed short term rental properties.

There are 4 bedrooms, two upstairs and two downstairs. Each downstairs bedroom has a queen size bed, ensuite bathroom and separate outside entry door. The upstairs bedrooms are artful and have lush, tree-top views one with a king size bed and one with a queen size bed, gorgeous garden views and a shared bathroom on the hallway. Our kitchen is fully stocked and we have dining both inside and outside on the large lanai.

Blue Kehena's private yard will amaze you with tropical trees, flowers and a private outdoor shower. Our small neighborhood is perfect for strolling on quiet streets, enjoying bird songs and finding exotic tropical plants. Ours is an Eco friendly house that harvests more energy and water than it consumes. Staying here will immerse you in real Hawaiian living!

Kehena Black Sand beach is just a short walk from the house then hike down the footpath for a unique clothing optional beach treat. Visit Uncle Robert's Night Market a short drive away in Kaimu every Wednesday night for local flavor foods, vendors and live entertainment... a MUST! Sunday drive to the Maku'u Market on Highway 130 for over 100 food, crafts and art vendors and lots of local vibe! The owner's wish is that when you leave Blue Kehena, you will truly feel the spirit of our island and the essence of ALOHA.

  I stayed here with friends for my 30th birthday for a week and we had an EPIC time! It was very comfortable for all of us, lots of space and enough bathrooms. The kitchen was the best equipped kitchen in a rental I have ever experienced! We would fight over the outdoor shower, amazing. The kehena beach is so close (grab some mangos on the way) and very fun to play in the waves, beautiful sunsets and morning swims, the house has pool noodles, boogie board and snorkel masks too. We visited shipman beach to swim with turtles (stop at lava thai after your hike!), went to the hot springs down the road, had a local night on wednesday at uncle awas, saturday farmers market at kamui, volcano hike. This is an awesome area to stay, lots to do, stock up on groceries and booze in Hilo beforehand! Thank you blue kehena!

  A must stay! Surrounded by jungle and very private. Feels like your in the trees in a tree house. Beautiful breath taking bach is only a couple minutes walk away. You can hear the waves in the distance. Fresh clean natural hot spring just down the road. Fisherman catching fish from the shore. Local Hawaiian music on Wednesday and organic fresh local food in Pahoa. Get a true feeling of island living in luxury at this beautiful home.

  The home has a really nice setup for a larger group. The tree frogs were delightful, you can hear the roar of the ocean in the distance. We had a lovely time and created wonderful memories. We did decide to take our chances walking down to the nearby black sand beach, a beautiful spot but didn't stay long due to the number of naked bodies flailing around. Overall this was a great stay, I am already missing the beautiful surroundings and night sounds.

  The house is wonderful and has beautiful fruit trees on the property! It offers a great beach escape if you’re comfortable with the clothing optional beach and a short but steep hike down which with young kids was a challenge. We used it as a “base camp” for our trip and we were able to see south point, hike in the volcano, and explore Hilo- just be prepared to drive a good amount if you’re planning to explore more of the island!

  The house is absolutely beautiful, exactly as described, and is in an incredible location. It's a 6-minute walk through a lazy neighborhood to an iconic and much-loved black sand beach. And a quick drive to the wonderful small town of Pahao. I'm just sad we didn't stay longer and hope to fix that in the future!

  Close to the beach and the management company was good. However there were lots of cockroaches (and I've travelled in Thailand, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania, and more and never experienced this many bugs). The girls in our group would get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and start screaming when bugs would scatter in front of them. Phone didn't work and there's no cell service. For a week with 8 people they only supplied 3 small trash bags and expected us to drive 40 minutes to the nearest town to pick up more. Discovered the smoke detector was not plugged in when it started beeping and woke us up (safety should always be prioritized and smoke detectors should be checked and verified before each rental.) Dishwasher "normal" cycle took over 3 hours. Would be nice to have later than 9pm quiet hours on Friday and Saturday. We stayed up to watch a movie until 11pm on Friday night and the neighbors complained. Overall a good experience but not one where you felt the owners went that little extra to make your trip special.

Our neighbors are close and it is important that we are good neighbors to those who live here ... meaning the 9pm quiet hours are really vital. A vacation rental home is meant to be enjoyed as a home, not a reosrt where others are also vacationing and don't care about noise. Anyway, the bugs are a bummer for sure which is why this home is treated bi-monthly by professionals. They may still get inside on occassion as this is in an actual jungle. The dishwasher has been replaced and we do keep up with maintenance. With Aloha, Jess

  Blue Kehena felt like home away from home. The lush jungle like setting provided privacy and added to the ambiance of this Puna house. It was well stocked, clean, very spacious, and nicely decorated. We stayed here 11 nights and loved every minute of our time at this magical place. And the closeness to the black sand beach is hard to beat. If you like peace and quiet and enjoy the “old Hawaii” vibe this is a place that won’t disappoint.
