Hilo Shangrila

Let the oceanfront, gated retreat of Hilo Shangrila envelop you, with its private saltwater pool, hot tub, and covered lanai, all just a stone's throw from the peaceful Pacific. New air conditioning has been added in all bedrooms for total guest comfort. We are constantly upgrading our home with guest comfort in mind! Situated in the quiet, rural Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, the home beautifully accommodates six guests.

Hilo Shangrila's airy, inviting living room and well-equipped kitchen feature soaring ceilings and a wall of glass doors to maximize ocean views and indoor-outdoor living. The home also boasts a dining space for six in full view of the ocean, an office space and additional sitting area, and a laundry area.

The master bedroom at Hilo Shangrila offers more vaulted ceilings, a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, and an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower. The welcoming guest bedroom also has high ceilings and a queen-size bed, as well as its own full bath just steps away, with a large tub and shower. The third sleeping area is adjacent to the master bedroom and has a pull out sofa.

The saltwater swimming pool has a breathtaking view of the brilliant blue Pacific. Its surrounding lanai provides the opportunity to soak up the warm Hawaiian sun or lounge in the shade. A covered hot tub is the perfect setting for enjoying cooler evenings, and a gas barbecue grill creates another option for meals at home.

This Puna-area home on the Big Island's east side allows easy access to attractions such as black-sand Kehena Beach, Pohoiki (aka Isaac Hale) Beach Park, and the Na Ala Hele hiking trail. In nearby Pahoa town, guests will find excellent seafood, Italian, Mexican and Filipino restaurants, along with a 50's-style coffee shop and a natural foods market. At the farmers' markets, take advantage of the opportunity to sample unusual local fruits (like passion fruit, star fruit, lychee, mango, and papaya); feast on a homemade crepe with bananas, chocolate and cream; try some homemade Thai noodles or salads; find a unique, hand-crafted piece from a Big Island artist; enjoy a soothing professional massage; or experience authentic Hawaiian music.   Hilo Shangrila lives up to its name. It is truly an idyllic place. The home is spacious, clean, comfortable, amply furnished and equipped. The ocean view is spectacular. We saw whales on three of the seven days we were there. A special treat was watching the sunrise at Maku'u Point, just a short walk away at the end of the street. Wish we could have stayed longer.

  Stayed in this location 4-years ago, and things have definitely gone downhill. Maintenance of home doesn't seem to be a top priority. Cleaning fee, but when we arrived we found litter outside(used bandaid, straws, etc). Inside the toilet had obviously not been cleaned. Refrigerator died in the first 24-hrs after we arrived. We notified the management team, but it took more than 24-hrs for a replacement, causing the loss of food that we had purchased. We were reimbursed for the loss of food and given $18 for the inconvenience, but not reimbursed for having to eat out during this time. Vrbo was of no use at all with the issue. Not the best way to start a vacation.

    Aloha! We find this a truly hurtful review. This property is constantly being updated. In fact, in the last 4 years the house has a new king bed in the main bedroom, new living room couches, all new artwork, linens (constantly being updated), new BBQ grill, new photographs (2022) and much more. As soon as you notified us of the broken refrigerator we had a repairman at the house. The assessment was that the refrigerator was dead beyond repair so we purchased, delivered and installed a new refrigerator within 24 hours. Our entire team applauded this Herculean task because in over a decade of managing dozens of homes it has never been done so fast before on this island in the middle of the Pacific. Furthermore, we delivered a cooler full of ice and you had access to the mini fridge in the Studio. And we reimbursed you for spoiled food plus extra for the bother. We had no idea there were cleaning issues - our professional cleaners usually get glowing reviews but they are human and it is possible they missed something. You did not notify us at all about your displeasure. We were in constant contact with you so it is so confusing to read this review now. Big sad face :( Please understand that when you book a property through VRBO or any other billion dollar corporation they have no access to any home and they did not notify us of your dissatisfaction. That is why we, Salt Water Hawaii, with the most experienced vacation rental team in East Hawaii, is here for you throughout your stay. It sure is a bummer when an appliance dies in the home you rented. We get it! And that's why we mobilized SO quickly. Giving my hard working local team this review hurts a LOT.   From the moment we arrived we were amazed. The house has an unbelievable back yard and view. It is located around 30 minutes from Hilo, 40 minutes from Volcano National Park, and under 2 hours from Kona. The grounds are well kept and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. We would go back 100 times over! It honestly kind of ruined our stay on Oahu after we left Big Island just because of how amazing the house and island were!

Getting them working would require major construction and having the pool out of commission for quite a while and nobody wants that. We figure, all the better for night time swimming privacy ;-) This is the first time we've heard negative feedback about the beds. They are high quality mattresses, and we have had quite a bit of feedback saying they are very comfortable. Mattress firmness is such a personal preference.   A completely amazing location to stay away from tourist crowds and relax. Fully ocean front on a short rocky cliff, the views in the morning with the cool breeze all day long were delightful. We could have stayed hunkered down for our entire stay, but it was hard to resist the quaint restaurants and new gourmet market (with live music in the bar) just 7 miles south.

  We had a wonderful, relaxing time at this amazing home. The large lanai and pool near the ocean were where we spent most of our time. We have rented several homes on The Big Island, but this was the perfect combination of everything we needed and wanted. The manager of Salt Water Vacations texted us the first night to make sure we had arrived safely and to answer any questions that we had. The air conditioner in the second bedroom is quite loud so bring ear plugs for your best sleep.

  I’ve been to the Big Island many times but never stayed on the Hilo side. We loved it and I wish we had stayed longer. Even though it was smack in the middle of the “rainy season”, we had only a few showers (one coolly thunderous) during our stay. We watched turtles in the waves all day long. The pool is fantastic, solar heated to a perfect temperature and the hot tub is also great. The kitchen is well-equipped and the beds are comfortable. The back screen door needs to be fixed, as well as the dishwasher top shelf. The information provided before we arrived was not update and contained some incorrect information. All in all, great place to be, great location. Would definitely rent it again.
