Hale Mauka

Volcano Hale Mauka welcomes you to a lovely private cottage nestled in the middle of the rainforest! Our house is very clean and well appointed. Hale Mauka offers you a place to come home and relax after a long day out exploring and playing.

Rates are for up to 4 guests. Do not exceed occupancy of 4.

SOAK in our 110 gallon tub for TWO with private rain forest views! Our tub is so insulated that it stays warm for hours! Who needs Jacuzzi or Spa? ..

Our two bedrooms are each appointed with comfortable beds. A California King Tempur-Pedic mattress in one bedroom and a queen size pillow top mattress in the other.

Enjoy that morning Kona coffee or glass of wine in the evening on the Lanai outside while enjoying the sounds and magic of the rainforest.. You won't see anything but huge fern trees and many birds and our local Kalij Pheasants when you sit on our Lanai!

We have an amazing fireplace to take the chill from the house on those chilly rainforest evenings, and we supply a starter amount of firewood. Enjoy the Smart TV that you can watch your favorite Netflix, Prime etc. movies. We also have a few DVD movies to choose from if you just want to just chill at home. Three sky tubes in our ceiling offer moonlight or sunlight into the kitchen and living room for ambient lighting.

The Village and National Park are less than 3 miles away. You can also explore our artist community and dine at some ono (tasty) restaurants here in Volcano. Our kitchen here at Hale Mauka is perfectly set up with everything you will need to make that meal at home or use the outdoor gas grill. Our dining room that is almost completely glass with views of the beautiful rainforest!

  Fabulous base in Volcano. The house is modern and extremely comfortable. Interior layout is open and perfectly proportioned. The beds are great. The veranda is covered so you can be outside in type of weather enjoying the sounds of nature. Just a few miles from the entrance to the park, and close to Volcano village. I would absolutely stay here again.

  The house was spacious and extremely comfortable! Nicely decorated with interesting books to peruse. The tub was a highlight after much hiking at the National Park. The kitchen was extremely well equipped with everything you could need. Plus, the ceramic cups and plates were quite beautiful! We loved the green house dining room. Wished it was easier to access. The weather wasn’t quite in our favor, so didn’t get to use the lanai as much as we wanted. Plus, the neighbors had a huge party that went into the night, and the local dogs were very vocal throughout our stay. So not as quiet as expected. Rental company was very easy to work with.

  Residence is super clean and well decorated with a curated feel. Definitely not a “generic, could have found that anywhere” vibe. The 2 bed / 1.5 bath works perfectly for our family of 4.

Hale Mauka was spotless and just as private as pictured, had tasteful and interesting art and decor, very comfortable bed, and spacious bath (not to mention the tub!). Thoughtful amenities such as small space heaters, flashlights and binoculars, and nicely appointed lanai, living room and fern-side dining room. The property team were very amiable and responsive, as well. We loved it!

The location is perfect and provided close and easy access to everything that Volcanoes National Park has to offer. The house is virtually spotless and the amenities are wonderful.   Super! Has everything, we have stayed here three times now. Current owner has removed the Cover for the car, so your vehicle is out in the weather. And of course it does rain, its a rainforest eh? lots of critters on nearby properties too. But I love dogs, so I didn't mind, and the Roosters were new. We love it here, it is clean, huge TV, great mattresses and comfy couch. Everything you need and more, such as a heating toilet seat they have recently put in. Soaker tub to end all Soaker tubs too! Had everything we could possibly want. Love it.

  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the rainforest at Hale Mauka! The property was as described with comfortable beds, a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable living area and nice outdoor furniture to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest. The property was very convenient to Volcano National Park and Volcano village restaurants and also an easy day trip to see sights around Hilo. Our two favorite activities in the area were the Kilauea Iki hike in Volcano National Park and Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve near Hilo. We also enjoyed several meals at nearby Ohelo Cafe. It was a nice touch to have the manager check in on day of arrival to make sure we had arrived safely. If you're arriving after dark, there are no lights in the area, highly recommend you take the management company up on leaving some lights on! I would not hesitate to recommend or stay at this property if we're in the area again.

  This cabin was really a wonderful place to stay. It has a lot of luxurious little touches, but also so much interesting character. My daughter enjoyed playing outside and having a bath in the giant tub. I appreciated the decor, from the old Japanese film marquees to the photographs of a particular person in lots of spots in Hawaii from some time a few decades ago.
  The high ceilings helped a two bedroom cabin feel spacious. There were lots of small spaces for being together or getting some alone time. We all came away wishing we were staying longer. We spent most of our time in Volcano NP, but it was such a great place to come back to in the evening, restful and interesting.

  I have been coming to Volcano for years and have stayed in myriad rentals. This was by far the best experience so far. I received a text from Sabrina on the morning of my arrival, introducing herself and instructing me to get in touch should anything come up. The house was clean, well appointed, and well explained. The house book was very thorough, so read it well. I spent most of my time at the volcano, which was a five minute drive up the highway, and it was super nice to come in after a chilly sunrise hike, start a fire in the fireplace, and make a hot cup of tea in the giant mugs they provide. I’ll also add that a lot of properties in volcano have cleared a lot of the close forest away from their houses. This house is practically hugged by giant tree ferns and ohia trees. It makes it feel like a hidden rainforest cabin. The weather was clear the entire time I was there - a rarity - but I could easily imagine loving that cup of tea in the huge porch while the rain came down on the ferns. I was lucky to find availability here for the exact days I needed — it was entirely booked up otherwise — so if it’s available for your visit, take it.

  We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful home. Everything was superior. It was quiet, secluded and tastefully decorated. Rooms were spacious and just as shown in pictures. Because we were a group of four, we could have used more dinner plates. This location was close to Volcanoes National park making it very convenient to visit at various times throughout the day or evening. Thank-you for making this stay a pleasant one.

  I wish that I could give Hale Mauka 10 stars. It was nothing short of amazing. The home was spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated and thoughfully appointed with every thing you need. I did a lot of research to find the perfect spot and this is it. My favorite thing about it is you are surrounded by the rain forest. Falling asleep to the sounds of the crickets and frogs and gentle rain falling was amazing. I can highly recommend this home.

  The property was better than described. You are in the middle of the rainforest on the flank of an active volcano. The interior was very comfortable, and felt like home the moment we walked inside. The kitchen is set up for someone that knows their way around a kitchen. The decorating was very nicely done. Beds were very comfortable. The fireplace was a nice touch given the cool nights on the mountain. The owner was very responsive before, during and after the rental when we had questions about directions and things to do in the area (there is a binder of things to do and favorite restaurants in the area). We highly recommend staying here, you will NOT be disappointed.

  We had a fabulous three day stay at this charming house. It was a perfect base from which to explore the park and surrounding area. I think it would also be great to go farther afield from here, especially if you like to sleep in cooler temps than you can get on the coast. The house was well maintained and equipped, charming, and cozy. Salt Water was very responsive and welcoming. There was one maintenance issue that Salt Water worked as quickly as possible to address, even outside business hours, and we really appreciated that! Will definitely stay here again if we return to the Big Island.

  Location: Great location, well suited for morning walks/run as well if you like freshest outdoors,
  its close to volcano park entrance (allows you to go several times, if interested in sunset/night time hike for the lava viewing); note that there are not many restaurants near by ) - thai place was good, and we highly recommend "tuk tuk food truck" !
  Host/Property Manager: very responsive, great communication and did immediate resolution of a dynamic problem with the cleaners crew. made sure that it was completed.
  Property: ideal property for a family of 4. Very warm setup, With a very nice Deck (literally feels like middle of jungle) - ideal for sipping morning Tea and for Night time relaxed conversations.

  We loved our stay at Hale Mauka. It was very clean and well-maintained and we got quick responses to a few questions we had. It's a quick drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We loved how quiet and peaceful it was. Although the coqui frogs are quite loud at night. We loved the house and would definitely recommend it and visit again. The bidet and wood burning fireplace were a hit with our family.

  This is such a cozy house and was just right for our visit to Volcanoes National Park which is just minutes away. We loved being in the rain forest with so many birds and tropical trees/plants. The beds are very comfy, the kitchen has basics and the bathroom has a huge bathtub. Everything is very clean! We were not thrilled with the very thin bedroom curtains which let in the light very early in the morning.
